Laser Printer Maintenance - The Tips That Can Help
by Jenny in

Keeping your laser printer in tip top condition and working at its most efficient can appear like a daunting task, but laser printer maintenance really doesn't have to be such a complicated task.

The laser printer is one of the most common and useful tools in the modern office, but making sure your laser printer maintenance routine is adequate is often something that is overlooked. It doesn't necessarily need to be a massively taxing or time consuming process, just some easy tips that can avoid having to call out a repair guy.

It is best to make sure that you printer is cleaned around once a month. The first step will be to switch off the printer, and leave it for around an hour to become cool. Once this is done, take out the paper trays, and also the toner cartridge, and place it on a piece of newspaper or paper that has already been used.

When cleaning the inside of the printer, make sure you're using a cloth which is both dry and without lint, and use a brush to clean the harder to reach areas. If your printer is one that features corona wires, then these should be cleaned with a cotton bud with a little bit of isopropyl alcohol. Be careful on this step, as you do not want to break these wires. The last step in this part of the laser printer maintenance routine is to clean the rollers themselves, usually with a damp cloth as this is one of the most common areas for dirt build-up.

As well as cleaning the printer on a monthly basis, the next step in laser printer maintenance is to actually use the printer in line with the guidelines of the manufacturer. Avoid using cheap ink and cheap papers. Whilst these may be short-term savings, they are false economies, as they will only accelerate the degradation of the printer.

By following these simple tips, and making sure that your laser printer is always well maintained, then you will save on the costs of having to repair the printer further down the line.

If you only have a small fleet of laser printers used by your company, discuss with your local printer repair company as to how quickly they can normally respond to calls where problems occur, and whether they would consider a reduced callout fee if you agree that they will be the first port of call, without actually committing to a contract fee.
