Beijing, Apr 16 Hewlett-Packard, the world's largest printer manufacturer, on Monday entered the $24 billion market of high volume departmental printing with the launch of its CM8060 and CM8050 series multifunction printers based on the proprietary Edgeline technology.
As opposed to the dry electric photo printers that leading competitors like Canon, Xerox and Konica-Minolta sell, H-P claims Edgeline printers print as many as twice the number of pages before a breakdown as opposed to rival products.
Fewer breakdowns result in a substantial reduction in servicing costs, which are typically 30-40% of the lifetime cost of a printer. For a colour printout, the cost will go down by up to 30% per print, says H-P.
Reduced breakdowns have been possible due to a new technology that has minimised the manual movement of parts within the printer. While in a traditional printer it’s the printer head that moves, in CM8060 andCM8050 the printer head remains steady during printing while the paper moves on a drum. Six printer heads spray ink on the paper through over 50,000micro-nozzles. The printer heads have a 1:1 redundancy in nozzles, should any get blocked. H-P has spent $1.4 billion on developing scalable printing technology like Edgeline
